Text Box: Major General R. Martin Umbarger was appointed as The Adjutant General, Indiana National Guard on 11 March 2004 and reappointed by Governor Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. on 1 December 2004. As The Adjutant General, Major General Umbarger's primary focus is to lead the Indiana Army and Air National Guard.
General Umbarger began his career as an enlisted soldier for the Indiana Army National Guard in 1969. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry Branch, in June 1971 after graduating from the Indiana Military Academy. Prior to his current assignment, General Umbarger served as the Deputy Commanding General (Reserve Component) United States Forces Command. He also served as Commanding General of the 76th Infantry Brigade (Separate), which executed a very successful Deployment and Rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, Louisiana in May of 2000. General Umbarger is currently a principal member of the Army Reserve Forces Policy Committee.
